Some time last week I received my Kaeng Raeng detox package. I really wanted to do it as soon as possible, but quite frankly, I was afraid I’d be running to the bathroom. (Uh, it’s a detox, right??) So I was thinking I would do it over a 3-day weekend I have coming up.
But then, something happened. Pinterest got me.
On Wednesday, February 8, I worked from home during the day. Before starting work I logged onto the “P”… that time-sucking vortex of a black hole where the less disciplined could get lost for days.
I had started a board called “body” months ago — kind of like a “I-want-those-abs-so-I’ll-look-at-this-picture-and-maybe-I’ll-magically-get-them” board. And I found a bunch of really amazing pictures and quotes, like that reality check one. And something hit me.
Right then and there, I decided to try to stop eating sugar.
It’s a first step, I thought…and I don’t have to be perfect… but I have to try instead of just ignore the fact that even though I have been exercising regularly since last May I have yet to see a significant weight loss due to my efforts.
So then… on Saturday, February 11… after 3 whole days of no sugar… I decided to just go ahead and do the Kaeng Raeng detox. I figured if I was pooping my brains out I wouldn’t do it Monday at work.
I’d never done a detox before and I really didn’t know much about them… but a co-worker friend recommended Kaeng Raeng. After reading the basics on their website I was intrigued:
Kaeng Raeng is a nutritional meal replacement detox program that delivers you results without sacrificing taste, convenience, quality, or your sanity.
Choose your level: The Beginner (for first time users – our most gentle formula), The Veteran (for those having done at least one detox – our medium level intensity), or The Master (for regular detoxers – you know who you are).
Choose your timeline – either 3 or 6 day. The 6-Day program is ideal for those trying to lose weight. You’ll receive 3 packets per day (9 or 18 total) of the detox program you choose.
The program is simple and straight forward: just drink one pouch per meal time (3 times per day) in addition to raw fruits and vegetables. Simply add one pouch to 24-32oz of liquid. You can use water, juice, or non-dairy milk. For best results, just add water. You can also blend it with liquid, frozen fruit, or ice for a thicker sweeter smoothie.
I did the 3-day beginner.
First off: no gastrointestinal distress whatsoever.
Second: I wasn’t hungry at all. I was feeling a little… peckish? this afternoon. But not hungry, and definitely not starving.
Third: The detox instructions also say to drink 64 oz of water a day in addition to the smoothies. So I did that as well.
After the first day I figured out that 24 oz of unsweetened vanilla almond milk + 8 oz of white grape juice + whatever fruit I wanted to add + some crushed ice — added to each pouch — was the best tasting combination.
I did not eat much actual food — aka, raw fruits and veggies. In addition to the smoothies I ate the following:
Saturday lunch: a salad of baby lettuces / gala apples / red grapes with a little olive oil / balsamic vinegar drizzled over it. I know the O/V was not “detox approved” but I used very little — just to have a little dressing.
Saturday dinner: Lettuce Wraps — kind of a variation of this recipe, using just avocado, cucumber, red peppers, carrots, fresh parsley and lemon juice, mixed together and served on romaine lettuce leaves.
Sunday morning: 1 cup of coffee with real milk. I had to have at least one! And I don’t do black… and almond milk in coffee doesn’t taste great for me.
Sunday evening: 1 banana
Monday mid-morning: 1 cup grapes
Monday lunch: more of the Lettuce Wraps
And that’s it for food.
How do I feel physically? I’d say pretty good. Not bloated at ALL… which makes me realize that I usually am bloated. I worked out Saturday morning pretty hard, harder than I have in months… and I did feel achy and tired Saturday, but I have to say that was probably mostly from the workout and not the detox. I felt like I had a bunch of energy Sunday and I did tons of stuff around the house. And today? I’m still achy from my Saturday workout. My arms are KILLING ME. But that is because my trainer made me do bench presses and some other kind of arm machine. Pectoral Fly? I dunno. The skin on my face feels a little… flaky? today. Not crazy… just a little different than it usually does. No one noticed except me.
How do I feel mentally? I’d say pretty good. I wanted to do this detox to jump-start some healthy eating habits. I feel like I’m on the right track. I want to treat my body better not just to look better, but to be better and to be healthy, one day at a time.
